Tide #5

This series of five paintings is inspired by exploring the reefs on Kariyarra Country when the tide is out.

When the water pulls back, you can walk out across the mud reef. At first it looks quiet and earthy, cracked mud and shallow pools stretching out toward the ocean. But once you walk far enough past the mud the reef begins to reveal itself.
Suddenly you are surrounded by colour. Coral, shells, sea plants, sea stars, urchins and little pockets of life appear everywhere. It feels like discovering a hidden world a colourful underwater garden that only shows itself when the tide is low.

For me, these places are part of Kariyarra Country. Walking the reef is something many of us grow up doing, exploring, learning and observing the life that exists there.

This series celebrates the beauty of those coral gardens and the magic of what is revealed when the tide goes out.
