Acacia pycnantha, the golden wattle is a hardy, short-lived large shrub or small tree found in south-eastern Australia on dry soils in open forest, woodland and scrub. It has bright green flattened leaf stalks instead of real leaves and produces masses of fragrant bright yellow, ball shaped, fluffy flowers in late winter and early spring. The rich flower nectar provides a food source for a variety of birds and insects. Wattles are resilient plants that can re-sprout after fire or germinate from long lasting seeds that have a hard protective coating. The bark is rich in tannins and used for tanning leather.
